Abstract
- Background: Recent studies had shown that early phases of diabetes development is associated with oxidative stress and atherosclerosis. In type 2 diabetes atherosclerosis development have been related with high ferritin and low folate levels. The aim of this study is to investigate contribution of these two parameters on development of atherosclerosis in early phases of diabetes (pre-diabetes). Patients and Methods: This study included over random sample of 52 patients: 17 male (34%) i 34 females (66%). They were separated in two groups: group N – patients with normoglycaemia and group D - patients with prediabetes (45%). Results: 52 patients were examined ; mean age of group N=63, 42&plusmn ; 10, 9 years ; group D=64, 54&plusmn ; 8, 9 years. Values of HBA1C were in group N=4, 67%&plusmn ; 0, 3 ; in group D=4, 96%&plusmn ; 0, 4 ; ferritin in group N=74, 1μ g/mL&plusmn ; 18, 2 ; in group D=134, 1μ g/mL&plusmn ; 16, 2. The levels of folate were in group N=10, 9μ g/mL&plusmn ; 6, 2 ; in group D=8, 1μ g/mL&plusmn ; 3, 2. The results indicated statisticaly higher index ferritin / folat (p
