Abstract

Functional diagnostics in sports, if done properly, may provide useful information about cardio-vascular, ventilatory and muscular systems when performing the basic task - gas exchange. Well-known parameters of aerobic capacity are maximal oxygen uptake and aerobic and anaerobic threshold. Determination of anaerobic threshold in the water is of great importance for everyone who wants to know his or her functional abilities and heart rate zones. All information provided by testing can be used to determine optimal and valid training intensity, especially in the endurance-related sport activities. Why not progressive treadmill test, or progressive bicycle tests? Swimmers, water polo players, triathletes need to be tested in water because of lower maximum heart and water specifics. Five testing protocols in pool are presented with four methods of determining anaerobic threshold.
