Abstract

The presentation will focus on two dimensions of gender inequalities: 1) participation of female and male students in primary, secondary and tertiary education (based on analysis of statistical data) ; and 2) presentation and portraying of women and men in textbooks (based on the results of the content analysis of the literature textbooks for basic education from the first to the eighth grade and for grammar schools from the first to the fourth grade (altogether 12 textbooks). Both share of female and male students in secondary and tertiary education and presentation of women in the textbooks reflect the traditional-patriarchical image of women's role in Croatian society. Starting from the secondary education, a division of schools for &laquo ; ; male&raquo ; ; and &laquo ; ; female&raquo ; ; professions is evident. Through domination of the men in the textbook items and stereotyped portraying of the male and female characters, the analysis of textbooks also points to the elements of discriminatory model of education for the gender roles.
