Abstract
- CSCs are a small population of poorly differentiated cancer cells that have superior tumor-repopulating potential and (at least in some cancers) drive disease progression and resistance to therapy.Similarly to their normal counterparts, CSCs harness a variety of mechanisms to evade immune recognition and elimination.Cancer cell stemness is maintained by multiple DNA and histone epigenetic alterations that also enable immunoevasion.Targeting epigenetic alterations that promote CSC stemness and immunoevasion stands out as a promising approach to increase the sensitivity of some tumors to immunotherapy.
