Abstract
- It is believed that optical fibers can be used to detect quench in superconducting magnets. In real magnets quench strains has to be separated from operational strains, which may be quite large, spatially inhomogeneous and time dependent. In order to detect quench, it is important to separate quench strains from operational strains. We present an approach to compute strains on optical fibers during normal operation and during quench. Strains are characterized by their variation in space and time. This model will be useful to separate operational strains from quench strains.
