Abstract
- To estimate the peening effects of different peening media by the same measuring parameters expediently, this paper focuses on the dynamic effects of different peening media with equal initial kinetic energy on the response of the target material. The expanding cavity model is developed to reveal the evolutions of effective strain rate, average contact pressure, peening media velocity, dimple size and plastic region size. Finite element simulations of impacting target by different peening media are performed. Shot peening and indenter impacting experiments are carried out to verify the calculated and simulated results. The comparison shows a good agreement among the calculated, simulated and experimentally measured data. It is found that the change of impacting velocity under the same kinetic energy has little influence on the residual stresses. The peening effects of different media that have the same indenting head size can be estimated by the kinetic energy.
