Abstract

•What is the primary question addressed by this study? Is outpatient mental health care within 7 days of inpatient discharge associated with reduced short-term suicide risk following hospitalization for suicidal thoughts or behaviors in older adults?•What is the main finding of this study? After adjusting for confounding, results suggested that 7-day follow-up care was not associated with lower postdischarge suicide risk.•What is the meaning of the finding? For this high-risk group, suicide-specific interventions may be needed during the critical postdischarge period.
