Abstract

•Hot solvent reflux extraction method of T. prunioidespods herbal tea has led to more efficient retrieval of antioxidant components resulting in higher extract yields.•The high antioxidant activity of T. prunioidespods herbal tea explains the effective traditional use of this plant for the treatment of many ailments.•Heavy metal contaminations should be one of the quality control parameters that should be monitored when collecting T. prunioidespods herbal tea for potential human consumption.•Data from the proximate analysis, metal analysis and antioxidant activity are sufficient to conclude that T. prunioidespods herbal tea have the potential to be used in herbal tea formulations because of their nutritional value and medicinal properties.
