Abstract

In this study, the numerical solutions for the bearing capacity of strip footing on rock mass subjected to eccentric vertical load are presented. The effect of eccentricity on the ultimate bearing capacity is investigated and the results are presented in the V-M plane, where V is the eccentric vertical load and M is the moment associated with the eccentric vertical load. The influence of the eccentricity on the failure zone beneath the strip footing is identified and highlighted. The results are utilized to develop a non-linear failure envelope, expressing the permissible combination of vertical load and moment possible on various rock mass configuration for strip footing. The applicability of the developed failure envelope for the case where the vertical load and moment may act independently on the strip footing is also established.
