An instance of Neanderthal mobility dynamics: a lithological approach to the flint assemblage from stratigraphic unit viiiof El Salt rockshelter (Alcoi, eastern Iberia)

•Neanderthal itineraries and raw material disposal or distribution appear to be linked, in this case associated to the fluvial network of a main river and tributaries.•A background of geological surveying and sampling is needed in order to perform petroarchaeological approaches.•Identifying flint types is a very useful first step in petroarchaeological characterisation, but not the end of it since flint types only report primary formations.•Analysing signs of postgenetic processes occurring on raw material is mandatory for achieving interpretations on hunter-gatherer mobility dynamics.
