Abstract
- The mineral oil has the disadvantage of its relatively low flashpoint. The transformers used inside buildings have a less-flammable liquid. Mineral oil is also a pollutant to the environment, and its insulating properties deteriorate quickly. As an alternative, the researchers examined the suitability of Coconut oil. In this research work, different laboratory tests were carried out to ascertain the suitability of refined coconut oil in replacing mineral transformer oil used for insulation and cooling purposes. For laboratory studies seven oil samples were prepared. Each sample containing 500 ml of refined coconut oil, 100 grams of paper insulated copper strips, varied quantity (in ppm) of passivator Di-tert-butyl-p-cresol (DBPC). Oil samples were processed through nitrogen bubbling for degasification of dissolved oxygen in oil. It is seen from the studies conducted that the refined coconut oil with additives provides better electrical properties. Dissipation factor and leakage current were found to have decreased. Results show that DBPC and Irgamet-39 play a crucial role in effectively preventing oil sludge formation and deterioration. It has also been found that 500 ppm of Irgamet-39 has the most optimum effect in prolonging the life of the liquid insulation.
