Based on analysis of morphological characters and ITS sequences, a taxonomic revision of Loropetalumand Tetrathyriumis presented. Oliver's merging of Tetrathyriumunder Loropetalumis corroborated. L. subcapitatum, L. indicum,and T. simaoenseare reduced to synonymy under L. chinense.E. Asian Corylopsisis sister of Loropetalumamong the 12 genera of Hamamelidoideaestudied, which form four monophyletic clades coextensive with three tribes and one subtribe of Endress: Corylopsideae, Loropetalinae, Fothergilleae,and Eustigmateae.
