Why Piezoelectric Material Is Unsuccessful in Interactive Displays: Challenges in High Detection Accuracy

Abstract
- Piezoelectric-based force sensing in interactive displays has attracted worldwide attention due to its intrinsic ability to efficiently convert mechanical energy into electric energy. However, because of faulty detection accuracy, commercialized products using piezoelectric materials have not succeeded in fully entering the market. To explain this situation, we investigate the matter through a finite element analysis (FEA) method. The results of our investigation reveal that unstable forcevoltage responsivity and propagated stress resulting from adjacent force-touch locations are two key issues that substantially degrade detection accuracy.
