Abstract
- Triturus vittatus(Jenyns, 1835) has been subdivided in 5 subspecies: in addition to the typicalsubspecies, ophryticusBerthold, 1846, excubitorWolterstorff, 1905, ciliciensisWolterstorff, 1906, and chuldaensisBodenheimer, 1926, have been proposed. While the rather peculiar ssp. ophryticusis considered to be valid, the analysis of characters recorded for the other subspecies shows that over the whole range of geographic distribution no population has been found which justifies the subspecific division suggested by various authors.
