Abstract

Surface modification of nanoAl<subscript>2</subscript>O<subscript>3</subscript> with stearic acid by dry method was researched. The structures of nanoAl<subscript>2</subscript>O<subscript>3</subscript> before and after modified were characterized by IR. The modification effect on nanoAl<subscript>2</subscript>O<subscript>3</subscript> was measured with the activation index. In addition, the influence factors of modifier dosage, modification time and modification temperature were also discussed. The results showed that nanoAl<subscript>2</subscript>O<subscript>3</subscript> had been successfully modified with stearic acid. The hydrophily and lipophilicity experiments indicated that modified nanoAl<subscript>2</subscript>O<subscript>3</subscript> possessed lipophilicity property and could disperse in xylene. The optimal conditions of modification were as follows: the stearic acid was 7.5 wt%, based on the quality of nanoAl<subscript>2</subscript>O<subscript>3</subscript>, modification time was 50 min and temperature was 150 <superscript>○</superscript>C.
