The title compound KDO (VIII), an integral constituent of the lipopolysaccharide of Gram‐negative bacteria, as well as the KDO derivatives (IX), a valuable starting material for the KDO α‐glycoside synthesis, and other KDO derivatives are prepared starting from the pyruvate acetal (I).
