Abstract

The measured values of the relative stress‐optical coefficients C0 for about 60 glasses of the systems (I)‐(VIII) at 20 °C and at a wavelength of 1.5 μm range from ‐40 to +22 TPa‐1. This variation, which is about five times that of oxide and fluoride glasses, is indicative of the different combination possibilities for the units in the glass structure to give islands, chain or sheet fragments and three‐dimensional networks, respectively.
