This book contains the proceedings of a conference entitled "Cochlear Implants," conducted April 14-16, 1982, by the New York Academy of Sciences in New York. The purpose of this conference was to provide an international forum for investigators from a number of fields, including medicine, anatomy and physiology, engineering, speech and hearing science, and audiology, to discuss the design, testing, and theoretical basis for cochlear prostheses being used with profoundly hearing-impaired humans and with experimental animals. The book is divided into nine sections: acoustic coding of speech, normal coding in the auditory system, electrical stimulation of the auditory system, electrode fabrication techniques, cochlear implants and histologic damage, percepts from electrical stimulation, clinical results with cochlear prostheses, preoperative and postoperative evaluation of patients, and potential coding solutions for electroneural speech discrimination. This book attempts to provide the broadest base of information about cochlear prostheses; therefore, papers are included that have primarily
