Abstract: ONE of the mechanisms by which catalytic activities are regulated in cells is the segregation of enzymes by membranes. In this way, enzyme activity takes place only in a circumscribed area of the cytoplasm. Segregation clearly occurs for hydrolytic enzymes (such as lysosomal enzymes), which would otherwise act indiscriminately on cytoplasmic components.
