Abstract
- Summary 1.A study was made of the oxidation of propane with oxygen mixed with chlorine under flow conditions in a quartz vessel without filling attemperatures:of 250°, 310°, and 355°.2.It was shown that small additions of chlorine accelerate the oxidation of propane and increase the yield of oxygen-containing products. It was found that large additions of chlorine are undesirable, for the yields of valuable oxygen-containing products are not increased and far-reaching oxidation (combustion) processes are stimulated.3.It was found that one of the molecular intermediate products was an organic peroxide (isopropyl hydroperoxide), which was formed in considerable amount.4.Schemes proposed in the literature for the oxidation of hydrocarbons were examined in their application to the oxidation of propane, and it was shown that the effect of additions of chlorine is to be attributed mainly to increase in the rate of formation of initiating centers.
