Abstract

From temperature-dependent X-ray photoemission (XPS) spectra between 300 and 10 K of Sr doped La<subscript>2</subscript>CuO<subscript>4</subscript> and “123” compounds (YBa<subscript>2</subscript>Cu<subscript>3</subscript>O<subscript>7-d</subscript>) we deduce the absence of the Cu3d<superscript>8</superscript>(Cu<superscript>3+</superscript>) configuration in the ground state of these Mott insulators. The metallic character of these samples and involving those Cu atoms which are relevant for the superconducting properties arises from a(d<superscript>9</superscript>p<superscript>6</superscript>)+ß(d<superscript>10</superscript>p<superscript>5</superscript>) valence fluctuations, while the superconducting transition is indicated to be closely related to an incipient oxygen dimerization which is best detected upon cooling far belowT<subscript>c</subscript>.
