Abstract

We have measured the cross section of four charged pion production in photon-photon interactions in the invariant mass range 1.0≦W<subscript>γγ</subscript>≦3.2 GeV and up toQ<superscript>2</superscript>=16 GeV<superscript>2</superscript>. For 1.2 GeV≦W<subscript>γγ</subscript>≦1.7 GeV the process is dominated by ρ<superscript>0</superscript>ρ<superscript>0</superscript> production with a rapid rise in cross section around 1.2 GeV, well below the nominal ρ<superscript>0</superscript>ρ<superscript>0</superscript> threshold. The observed distributions in the two particle masses and in the production and decay angles are well described by an incoherent sum of the phase-space subprocesses γγ →ρ<superscript>0</superscript>ρ<superscript>0</superscript>, →ρ<superscript>0</superscript>π<superscript>+</superscript>π<superscript>−</superscript>, and →π<superscript>+</superscript>π<superscript>−</superscript>π<superscript>+</superscript>π<superscript>−</superscript>. A spin-parity analysis of the ρ<superscript>0</superscript>ρ<superscript>0</superscript> system showsJ<superscript>P</superscript>=2<superscript>+</superscript> to dominate, although 0<superscript>+</superscript> is also possible forW<subscript>γγ</subscript>≦1.4 GeV. Negative partity states are excluded.
