Abstract

Pregnancy specific β1-glycoprotein (SP1) was measured in maternal plasma by radio-immunoassay in 227 samples from 42 insulin dependent diabetic patients and in 145 samples from healthy pregnant women between 8 and 39 weeks. Haemoglobin Alc was measured in the diabetic samples to determine the degree of hyperglycaemia in the patients. SP1 levels were higher in diabetics than in controls between 8 and 30 weeks. The degree of hyperglycaemia did not influence the SP1 levels. Our results do not support the previous suggestion that SP1 has a regulatory function in carbohydrate metabolism during pregnancy.
