Abstract

Previous investigation of the dynamic stability of a gas-liquid interface between rotating cylinders led to the conclusion that gas ingestion is a naturally occurring phenomenon in viscoseals which could not be eliminated by optimization of the seal geometry. A modified seal design has been developed which greatly reduces the magnitude of gas ingestion without significant reduction in sealing performance.Further experimental studies of the aspect ratio and characteristic length indicate that these parameters have negligible effect on the viscoseal performance in the turbulent regime and that the aspect ratio has a minor effect on performance in the transition region.
