Abstract

Abstract: The pseudoternary section “FeO”-ZnO-(CaO + SiO<subscript>2</subscript>) with a CaO/SiO<subscript>2</subscript> weight ratio of 0.71 in equilibrium with metallic iron has been experimentally investigated in the temperature range from 1000 C to 1300 C (1273 to 1573 K). The liquidus surface in this pseudoternary section has been determined in the composition range of 0 to 33 wt pct ZnO and 30 to 70 wt pct (CaO + SiO<subscript>2</subscript>). The system contains primary-phase fields of wustite (Fe<subscript> x </subscript>Zn<subscript>1−x </subscript>O<subscript>1−y </subscript>), zincite (Zn<subscript> z </subscript>Fe<subscript>1−z </subscript>O), fayalite (Fe<subscript> w </subscript>Zn<subscript>2−w </subscript>SiO<subscript>4</subscript>), melilite (Ca<subscript>2</subscript>Zn<subscript> u </subscript>Fe<subscript>1−u </subscript>Si<subscript>2</subscript>O<subscript>7</subscript>), and pseudowollastonite (CaSiO<subscript>3</subscript>). The phase equilibria involving the liquid phase and the solid solutions have also been measured.
