Abstract
- The paramagnetic cluster anions Cp<INF>2</INF>Mo<INF>2</INF>Co<INF>2</INF>S<INF>4</INF>(CO)<INF>2</INF><SUP>-</SUP> (<BO>6</BO>), and Cp*<INF>2</INF>Mo<INF>2</INF>Co<INF>2</INF>S<INF>4</INF>(CO)<INF>2</INF><SUP>-</SUP> (<BO>6*</BO>) were prepared by the reaction of Cp<INF>2</INF>Mo<INF>2</INF>Co<INF>2</INF>S<INF>3</INF>(CO)<INF>4</INF> with p-toluene thiolate or by Na amalgam reduction of the cubane Cp*<INF>2</INF>Mo<INF>2</INF>Co<INF>2</INF>S<INF>4</INF>(CO)<INF>2</INF> (Cp* = C<INF>5</INF>Me<INF>4</INF>Et), respectively. The CO-substituted cluster Cp<INF>2</INF>Mo<INF>2</INF>Co<INF>2</INF>S<INF>3</INF>(CO)<INF>3</INF>(SAr)<SUP>-</SUP> (<BO>7</BO>) was a minor byproduct in the synthesis of <BO>6</BO>. The X-ray crystal structures of these anionic clusters were determined. The effects of the addition or removal of electron density from the cluster core on the cluster structure is presented.
