Abstract

The article discusses a court case where the New York Court of Appeals held that a copyright renewal signed by American musician and composer Duke Ellington in 1961 did not unfairly deprive his heirs a portion of foreign royalties on his works like "Mood Indigo" and "Sophisticated Lady." Judge Sheila Abdus-Salaam writing for the majority stated the contract showed that Ellington or his heirs are entitled to 50% of net revenues received from his works from foreign subpublishers.
