Abstract

This article discusses the history of trade and commerce in the Andean region of northern Chile from the period between 1880 and 1938. The author comments on the prevalence of indigenous Aymara traders in the region and describes the government policies enacted in relation to trade in Tarapacá in northern Chile, along the country's border with Bolivia. The relationship between commercial trade and ethnicity is examined and the government supervision of commerce in this region is also explored.
