Abstract

This article discusses the representation of American native populations in European theatrical productions from the late 17th to the mid-18th centuries. The author comments on the operas produced by the Purcell brothers in 1695 and Carl Heinrich Graun in 1755. He also considers the characteristics of the Spanish comedias (comedies) at the time, including their representation of American Indians. The so-called Leyenda Negra (Black Legend), a type of writing that demonizes the Spanish empire, is also explored.
