Abstract

The article discusses the political, religious, and social context in which Québec began to recognize Communist China during the 1960s. The secularization movement and the Quiet Revolution in the province and the Québécois' changing perception of China are discussed. Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau's visit to China in October 1973 is examined. The three periods of China-Québec relations including from 1858 to 1949, from 1949 to 1970, and from 1970 to 2013 are mentioned. Topics addressed include the influence of Catholic missionaries on China-Québec relations, the attitude of French-Canadian intellectuals toward Communist China, and the Maoist movement in Québec.
