Abstract
- The article explores the reasons behind the decision of the Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA) to sign the Good Friday Agreement on April 10, 1998 which ended the three decades of its violent campaign aimed at uniting Northern Ireland with its Republic neighbours to the south. Topics covered include the three strands of the agreement, the 1985 Anglo-Irish Agreement designed to weaken the Irish republican party Sinn Féin and the IRA, and the end of abstentionism in 1986.
