Abstract
- This article discusses the history of sugar plantations in Maracaibo Lake region in Mérida, Venezuela, during the period between the 16th and the 17th centuries. The author comments on the evolution of manufacturing processes in these sugar plantations, including changes in infrastructure, technology, and profitability. He also cites various previously unpublished historical documents culled from Venezuela's historical archives. An analysis of the sugar cane production throughout Latin America at this time is also provided.
