Abstract

This article discusses the social role of women in Spain following the period of Civil War beginning in the late 1930s. The author comments on the political and social ideologies, as well as the government policies implemented under dictator Francisco Franco, known as Francoism, regarding women's bodies and health. She also describes the concepts of femininity and race as it related to the social role of women at the time. Particular focus is given to the fashion and beauty industry in Spain during the post-war period.
