Abstract

The article focuses on ragged schools in Sydney, New South Wales, in the late nineteenth century and early period of the twentieth century. Improvements in social welfare and public education in the middle of the 1920s made the Ragged Schools obsolete. The original committee of the schools consisted mainly of Protestant laymen and clergy.
