Abstract

This article is based on the results of the research project "Feeling the Pulse of the community," "Identity politics and narratives of a Portuguese migrant community in Canada", funded by Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (Portuguese Science Foundation). The research focused on the study of the television show "Gente da Nossa", which reveals characteristics of an "ethnic minority media". The study integrates the field of Anthropology of Media, and draws on an ethnographic approach to the processes of production and broadcast of the show. The article aims at situating "Gente da Nossa" within the broad and complex field of relationships between the production and broadcast of "ethnic media", and the processes of ethnicization of migrant communities. The show is strategically conceptualized as a vehicle used in the production, diffusion, objectification and commodification of imagery representing the "Portuguese community in Canada." The ethnography carried out allowed for the reading and discussion of some key dimensions implicated in the construction of the concept of "community", and contributed as well through a case study to a better understanding of that multifaceted and complex cultural production.
