Abstract

The article discusses research performed by physicist Paul Miller from the U.S. Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory on ways to avert a collision between various astronomical objects and the Earth. Particular attention is paid to nuclear explosions as means of deflecting and disrupting an asteroid's approach towards the Earth. Computer simulations are also reviewed as a tool for predicting an asteroid's possible impact after a collision. A future research on comets is discussed as well.
