Abstract

Focusing on the architecture of the Great Mosque of Djenne in Mali, a building made entirely out of mud and which requires periodic re-plastering, the author argues that much of African architecture has remained an unrecognized art form disparagingly called "primitive." But, the author suggests, the architecture of Africa is perhaps richer for having remained so dormant.
