Abstract

The article looks at the internal organization and structure of the estates belonging to the abbey of Saint-Pierre de Lobbes, Belgium, during the 9th century through the examination of a polyptych of Lobbes dating from 868/869-889. Particular focus is given to the domains (villae) located in Hainaut, Belgium, and the Belgian region of Entre-Sambre-et-Meuse and the methods the monastery used to cultivate its villae's food reserves, particularly cereal, whether they constituted it's main source of revenue, and the way the cereals were harvested, produced, and redistributed. The author also considers the role of hydraulic engines, the place and status of mills and the people who had access to them, and the place of breweries.
