Abstract
- The article discusses the history of the all-African American Illinois National Guard regiment known as the 8th Illinois infantry and the 178th Infantry. It profiles former 8th Illinois Infantry colonel Otis B. Duncan, the establishment of the 178th Infantry, and the 8th Infantry's fight for admission into the Illinois State National Guard. The article discusses the leadership of 8th Illinois colonel John C. Marshall, the 8th's service in World War I and World War II, and the reorganization of the 178th in 1959.
