Abstract
- The article discusses the social backgrounds and political views and activities of two generations of secondary school teachers in Valencia, Spain, during the second half of the nineteenth century. The author highlights the importance of the education system to the political conflicts between liberals and conservatives in Spain. He addresses such topics as the selection and recruitment of teachers, the effect of teachers' status as tenured civil servants on their political and social views, and corruption within the school administration system.
