Abstract

This article discusses the social conditions in the region of Tucumán, Argentina, during the period from 1869-1895. The author comments on the social mobility in Tucumán, utilizing historical records relating to living conditions and standards. He also describes the influence of the vast economic development experienced by the country during this period, which ironically resulted in stagnant social mobility, according to the author. The role of education in the region, particularly regarding the indigenous populations, is also explored.
