Abstract

This article discusses the relationship between the flamenco dance and Catalan nationalism in Barcelona, Spain, during the first third of the 20th century. The author comments on the attempts by Catalan nationalists to end the popularity of the flamenco dance and its dancers through attacks on cafés and other establishments. She notes that despite their efforts, tourists and many others continued to seek out the flamenco dancers. The impact of the Spanish Civil War beginning in 1936 on the Catalan nationalist movement is also explored.
