Abstract

The article discusses public interest safeguards in relation to the copyright laws in Canada as of June 2012, focusing on the anticipated amendment of the nation's Copyright Act, as well as public domain rights and a historical overview of English copyright law since 1710 and the Statute of Anne. Several legal cases are examined including the Supreme Court of Canada copyright case Théberge v. Galerie d'Art du Petit Champlain Inc. Various Canadian statutes are mentioned such as the Patent Act.
