Abstract

The article presents an analysis of the conflict of interpretations regarding events that occurred in Spain during the Civil War and the dictatorship of Francisco Franco, with a focus on the construction of a collective memory. An historical overview of the transformation of post-Franco Spain as well as a revision of official policies to hide the past in order to consolidate the democracy is presented. It is the author's view that the so-called pact of silence prevented a public discussion on the subject, which would be useful to achieve a real political consensus. Particular focus is given to the work of the Asociación para la Recuperación de la Memoria Histórica, which is an organization to investigate crimes that occurred during the Civil War, especially mass graves.
