Abstract

This study was conducted with 344 clients of federally funded HIV-clinics within the state of New Mexico and posited that the social ecological model of public health is an essential framework for explaining medication adherence and self-efficacy for people living with HIV (PLWH). Three levels of the PLWH client experience were considered in this analysis: individual, interpersonal, and organizational. Analyses examined the strongest predictors of medication adherence and self-efficacy. Drug use and critical appraisal were the strongest predictors of medication adherence, while depression and isolation were the strongest predictors of medication self-efficacy. Findings demonstrated the usefulness of the social ecological framework and supported the importance of examining the constructs of medication adherence and self-efficacy separately. Finally results provided direction for intervention and future research within the HIV-clinic setting. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
