Abstract

Aiming to make Singapore a vibrant hub of culture and the art in Southeast Asia, the Singapore government has put in remarkable efforts to nurture and promote the creative industry sector. A sustainable culture has, therefore, become an important foundation for the industry to thrive, and the art, along this line, has also emerged as an important resource for a sustainable culture. Together with the increasing use of new media by many local art groups or individual artists for their creative activities, this poses an interesting connection between technology, culture and the art within the umbrella of sustainability. In-depth interviews with Singaporean artists shed light on what cultural sustainability means to the artists, how they see themselves in the sustainability process and how information and communication technologies (ICTs) influence their creative activities. Lastly, by examining sustainability from the cultural perspective, this study hopes to add another dimension to a concept deeply rooted in the environmental domain. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
