Abstract

The article presents information on the system of Manorialism in France in the Middle Ages, and more particularly on the trial of peasant Berthet de Lessart in 1422-1423. This system was characterized by the vesting of legal and economic power in a Lord of the Manor, supported economically from the obligatory contributions of the peasant population under his jurisdiction. Topics discussed include the symbolic aspect of these contributions, notably the one called "corvée," the resistance of peasants concerning the paying of these contributions, and details on the case of Berthet de Lessart.
