Abstract

A biography of French singer and songwriter Victor Capart is presented. Capart was born to Belgian-born parents under the July Monarchy in Tourcoing, France, in 1839. His songs were influenced by socialism and inspired by the daily lives of workers in the city of Tourcoing. He was sentenced to prison for insulting the city's daily newspaper "L'indicateur," left for exile to Belgium in 1877, and returned to France in 1881 to continue his career as a singer and songwriter. It is suggested that Capart was acting as a spy.
