Abstract

The article discusses alternative energy sources for cotton production following higher prices of sources such as coal, petrol and grid electricity, and concerns with greenhouse gas emissions. Bioethanol is described to deliver an extremely good energy ratio but has a high capital cost, and a limited storage time. A debate is presented to ensue on whether it would be desirable to convert cotton stalks into methane gas. Improving pumping systems is suggested to improve energy efficiency.
