Abstract

The article presents a study related to the link between insulin resistance and iron overload disorder in browsing rhinoceros through the use of an equine model. It informs that the iron overload disorder are present in captive rhinoceros but has not been documented in the wild. In this study, the nutritional requirements of horses are used as a guide for rhinoceros because they have similar gastrointestinal tracts. The study concluded that on evaluating responses by gender a significant correlation exists only for females influenced by one insulin resistant individual. It is found that there is a potential link between insulin resistance and body stores of iron in captive browsing rhinoceros.
